Akkulam- Veli Lakes
-
The major part of storm water and waste water of Trivandrum City drains into the Akkulam lake - the Amayizhanchan canal and its many branches being the main conduit through which water enters the lake
-
The Veli lake has a sand bank or bund with the Arabian Sea which is broken during monsoon to let out the water swelling up in the lake -this way the Alkkulam-Veli lakes helps the city from flooding .In the future if sea levels rise , the lake will again absorb the rising water to a large extent and protect the city - this makes Trivandrum a naturally Resilient city .
-
The presence of this water body gives a wide area of open space and with the cooling effect of water contributes to the microclimate .
-
The total area of the Akkulam watershed draining to Akkulam Lake is 135 sq.km. This includes 1. Ulloor thodu 2. Pattom thodu, 3. Pazhavangadi thodu 4. Medical College thodu 5. Thettiyar thodu
-
Akkulam Veli lake system consists of 2 portions : Akkulam lake which is fresh water and the Veli lake which is saline in nature. The Veli lake mouth is closed with sand deposition during the majority months in a year. The fresh water- saline water wedge generally extends upto the Akkulam bridge on the national highway. During the wet periods of monsoon, when there is large inflow to lake system, and possibility of flooding occurs in the u/s drainage area, the mouth of the Veli lake is cut open artificially, and thereafter closes naturally, when there is less inflow
